Reporting a Problem

Before reporting an IT related problem to the Helpdesk there are a few things you can do yourself to try and resolve/diagnose the problem:

  • Is anyone else in your area getting the same problem? If so then ring the Helpdesk.
  • Try logging/switching off your PC and restarting it, software is not completley bug free and this will more often than not solve most problems.
  • If you are having a problem with a particular software program have you tried closing the application you are running and opening it again.
  • If there's another PC nearby see if the same problem happens on the other machine.

Please also check out our  "checklist of General problems" below.

Checklist of general problems
  • Login or Network Problems?
  • My computer won't start up
  • My computer has locked up
  • Portia problem
  • My Printer won't work
  • Login or Network Problems?

    • If you are trying to login and get a password error then make sure the CapsLock light is not lit on the keyboard - if it is, press the CapsLock key to turn it off and try again. If you fail to login after three attempts the Intruder Lockout will activate. Please contact the IT Service Desk on 6444.
    • If you are trying to login and get an error about "LDAP" - make sure your username is spelt correctly and that the (blue) network cable is plugged into your computer at the back and also into the wall socket. If it is, press the Escape (ESC) key at the top left of the keyboard so you see the CTRL ALT DELETE message on the screen and start again (if you cannot get back to the CTRL ALT DELETE screen, then turn off the computer and re-start it).

    My computer won't start up

    • Check all the relevant plugs are plugged in to the mains sockets and switched on (just because you never unplug your PC/Monitor/Printer doesn't mean someone else in the office didn´t because they needed to plug in their kettle etc...)
    • Check that the monitor power switch is on as well as the base unit (again just because you may not turn the monitor switch off, doesn´t mean someone else hasn´t). Make sure the power cable is not loose in the back of the monitor.
    • Make sure that none of the leads have come loose at the back of your computer (keyboard, Mouse, Monitor and Power).

    My computer has locked up

    • Does the mouse still move ?
    • If not, does the caps lock light in the top right of your keyboard go on and off when you press the Caps Lock key?
    • If neither works then your computer has completely frozen and you will have to restart your machine. Press the on/off button. If the computer does not start shutting down or takes a long time to do so, then hold the on/off button in for about 6 seconds and it will turn off. Count to 10 before turning it on again.
    • If the application does not respond when you are typing, make sure that window is still active (the window title will have a blue background), sometimes other programs pop up messages to you and you may have to click in the program window again to make it active again.

I have a problem with Portia

    • Known issues with Portia are posted on the Portia help page…

    My Printer won't work
